Ohio Continuing Education Requirements
Required Continuing Education Hours
Life and Health Producers
20 CE hours are required every 2-year license term. Licensees in the first license term should not complete courses until after January 1st (See “License Term” below).
Effective, January 1, 2011, producers will be required to complete 24 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, every 2-year license term (see license term below).
Producers planning to sell the following product(s) have special training or education requirements as described below:
Special Training/Education Requirements
Long-Term Care (LTC) Insurance

Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products in Ohio, producers must complete an initial 8-hour, state-approved LTC training course. (Go to the course catalog to order WebCE's Ohio Long-Term Care Programs, Policies, and Partnerships, which fulfills this requirement.)

Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: After completing the 8-hour initial training requirement, producers must complete 4 hours of state-approved LTC training every 24-month compliance period following completion of the initial LTC training. (Go to the course catalog to order WebCE's Long-Term Care 4-Hour Training, which fulfills this requirement.)
Property and Casualty Producers

Special Training/Education Requirements
Flood Insurance
Before selling flood insurance, licensees must complete a one-time 3-hour training class on flood insurance and the National Flood Insurance Program. New licensees must comply with flood training before their first CE compliance date. Nonresident CE Requirements
If the producer has not taken a NAIC LTC training course in another state, the nonresident producer selling LTC must comply with the Ohio LTC training requirements:

License Term
License term begins January 1st of the year following the license issuance date and ends December 31st two years later. Licenses issued in even years, will expire in even years. Licenses issued in odd years will expire in odd years.
Since the first 2-year compliance period for new licensees begins January 1st following the license issuance date, any courses taken before that time will not be credited toward the first CE compliance period.
Effective, January 1, 2011, the license term ends on the last day of the producer’s birth month every two years.
CE Subject Requirements

Category restrictions: Life/Health and Property/Casualty producers can complete 20 CE hours in any line of authority

Course presentation: Producers can take courses through online and paper-based self-study.

Study requirements: Students should read the course material prior to taking the final exam.
Final Exam Requirements

Exam proctor requirements: Self-study final exams are open book. Students may refer to the course material as often as needed.

Exam rules: The final exam must be passed with a score of 70 percent or higher to receive credit. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.
CE Carryover Allowance
No excess CE credit hours may be carried over to the next 2-year license term.
Course Repetition Rules
Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in a 2-year license term.
Certificate of Completion
WebCE provides online, printable certificates of completion in Ohio. Certificates of completion are available to print online immediately after the final exam is passed. The licensee must keep a copy of each certificate of completion in his or her files for 3 years.
CE Completion Reporting
Next-day Reporting - WebCE reports course completions electronically to Sircon every business day.

CE Exemptions
The following licensees are exempt from continuing education requirements:

Persons holding a limited authority license

Nonresident licensees in compliance with CE requirements for their home states

Nonresident licensees who completed a NAIC LTC training course in another state are exempt from taking the special training requirement in Ohio

Persons granted inactive license status by the State Director of Insurance
