Required Continuing Education Hours

Life and Health Producers

36 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 3 year license term (see license term below). Only 18 hours (50% of the total CE requirement) may be obtained through self-study. The remaining 18 hours must be completed in a classroom environment. Producers planning to sell the following product(s) have special training or education requirements as described below:

Annuity Training Requirement

Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products in Iowa, prodcuers must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hoursThis requirement is separate from the current requirement for Indexed Insurance.  (Go to our course catalog to order 4-Hour Annuity Training Course which meets this requirement).

Indexed Insurance

All producers selling indexed life products must complete a one-time 4 credit-hour training course. (Go to the course catalog to order WebCE's Introduction to Indexed Products [Iowa Specific], which fulfills this requirement.)

Long-Term Care (LTC) Insurance

  • Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: A one-time training course of at least 8 CE credits in subjects related to long-term care insurance must be completed prior to selling any long-term care insurance. This training course is required to be in a classroom setting; however, WebCE has received a waiver from the IA Insurance Division stating our 8-hour self-study course may be taken to satisfy this requirement.   • Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: Following the initial training, producers continuing to sell LTC insurance must complete ongoing training of 4 CE credits in subjects related to long-term care insurance every three-year CE term afterward.(Go to the course catalog to order WebCE’s  Long-Term Care 4-Hour Training course or 4-Hour Long-Term Care Review, both of which fulfill this requirement.)

Property and Casualty Producers

36 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 3 year license term (see license term below). Only 18 hours (50% of the total CE requirement)  may be obtained through self-study. The remaining 18 hours must be completed in a classroom environment. Producers planning to sell the following product(s) have special training or education requirements as described below:

Flood Insurance

Resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies must complete a one-time 3-hour course approved for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). (Go to the course catalog to order WebCE's National Flood Insurance Program: What You Must Know course, which fulfills this requirement.)

Crop Insurance Producers

18 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 3 year license term (see license term below). Only 9 hours (50% of the total CE requirement) may be obtained through self-study. The remaining 9 hours must be completed in a classroom environment.

Roster Fees

A roster fee of $1.00 per CE hour is required to process course completion hours in Iowa and will be added to the order upon checkout.

Nonresident CE Requirements

If a nonresident producer’s home state does not have a CE requirement, the producer must comply with the Iowa CE requirement.

Special Training/Education Requirements

Annuity Training Requirement

Indexed Insurance

All nonresident producers who wish to sell fixed index life products must complete an approved 4-hour training course. (Go to the course catalog to order WebCE's Introduction to Indexed Products [Iowa Specific], which fulfills this requirement.)

Long-Term Care (LTC) Insurance

Nonresident producers who have completed an 8-hour NAIC  LTCP course approved for use in any other licensed state have met the Iowa LTC training requirement. Nonresident producers that have not taken an approved LTCP course in another state must meet the training requirement by completing an Iowa approved course.

License Term

The license term is the last day of the licensee’s birth month every 3 years.

CE Subject Requirements

Category restrictions:
There are no restrictions; however it would be preferred to take courses for license type.

Course presentation:
Self study online or correspondence.  Only 50 percent of credit hours may be obtained through self study.

Study requirements: 
Students should read course material prior to completing final exam.

Final Exam Requirements

Exam proctor requirements:
Self-study final exams must be monitored by a disinterested third party who shall NOT serve for examinations of family members, relatives, or dependents; employers or supervisors; employees or subordinates; partners, joint ventures, or co-owners; or for anyone in whom the proctor or instructor has an economic or other interest in assuring the successful outcome of the examination.

Exam rules:
The final exam must be passed with a grade of 70 percent or higher to receive credit. Exams are closed book. Students have unlimited retakes.

CE Carryover Allowance

Excess CE hours may not be carried over to the next renewal.

Course Repetition Rules

A course may not be taken for credit more than once within a 3 year licensing term.

Certificate of Completion

WebCE provides online, printable certificates of completion in Iowa. Certificate of completion will be available to print online immediately after a final exam is passed. Producers must retain a copy of each certificate of completion in their files for 4 years.

CE Completion Reporting

Next-day Reporting - WebCE reports course completions to State Based Systems (SBS), the CE administrator, every business day.

License Renewal Process

A renewal notice will be sent via email (if available) by the state 60 days prior to the producer's expiration date. The notice will state whether the CE requirement has been met and state the renewal fee.

A producer is required to renew his or her license in a timely manner, regardless of whether a notice is received from the Insurance Division.  *It is recommended that CE be completed at least 1 month in advance of license renewal.  Click here to check your license status. 

CE Exemptions

The following individuals are exempt from CE requirements:

  • A producer who is an attorney licensed to sell insurance. The producer/attorney must file a report showing proof of compliance with the continuing legal education requirement for the attorney's home state and pay the CE fee and the renewal fee.
  • Attorneys who do not have a CE requirement in their home states must comply with the Iowa insurance CE requirements.
  • A producer who is on extended active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • A nonresident producer who lives in a state where CE is required. These producers must file the renewal notice through the NIPR gateway. For details visit http://www.nipr.com.
  • A producer who is licensed for creditor surety. The producer must file the renewal report and pay the renewal fee.
