24-hours of insurance CE, including 3-hours of ethics are required every 2-year license term.

24-hours of insurance CE, including 3-hours of ethics are required every 2-year license term.

Insurance License Renewal

License Term

Effective August 20th, 2016: The biennial license term is changing from the date of birth to the last day of the licensee's birth month. Even birth years renew every even year. Odd birth years renew every odd year.

State Insurance Product Training Requirements

Annuity Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell annuity products.

Initial Training
Hours: 4
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling annuity products.

Long-Term Care Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell long-term care products.

Initial Training
Hours: 8
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling LTC products.
 
Ongoing Training
Hours: 4
Frequency: Ongoing training must be completed every license period, following the completion of the initial training requirement.

Insurance CE Exam Requirements

Exam Rules

Self-study final exams are open book. Producers may refer to the course material while the exam is in progress. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

Monitor Requirements

Self-study final exams are not required to be monitored.

Passing Score

Self-Study Final Exam: 70%

Repetition and Carryover

Carryover Rules

A maximum of 8 excess CE hours may be carried forward to the next 2-year license term. Additional ethics credits will carry over as general credits.

Repetition Rules

A course may not be taken for credit more than once within a 2-year license term.

Reporting and Insurance CE Certificates of Completion

Certificates of Completion

WebCE offers online, printable certificates of completion in Alaska. Certificates of completion will be available to print online immediately after the final exam is passed. Licensees must keep a copy of each certificate of completion in his or her files for 2 years after the renewal date unless there are excess CE credits carried forward to the next 2-year license term. If excess hours are carried forward, the certificate of completion must be kept in the licensee’s files for 4 years after the renewal date.

Reporting

Next-Day Reporting: WebCE reports course completions electronically to State Based Systems (SBS) every business day.

Insurance CE Course Requirements

Course Presentation

Licensees may complete the Alaska CE requirements through self-study. The self-study course and exam can be either paper or online.

Study Requirements

Self-Study Requirements: Students must read through every chapter of the course material for each course before attempting an open-book final exam.

Category Restrictions

Licensees may complete the 24-hour CE requirement by taking courses in the subject areas of : insurance technical or product information; risk management; insurance law and regulation; mathematics, statistics, and probability; economics; business law; finance; taxation directly related to insurance products; business insurance ethics; licensee professional liability; or business organization, management, and environment, including motivation, psychology, and sales training. No more than 8 CE hours may be completed in the subject areas of business organization, management, and environment, including motivation, psychology, and sales training.

Exemptions from Insurance CE Requirements

Insurance CE Exemptions

Licensees are exempt from CE requirements if one of the following is true:

  • Nonresident adjusters
  • The nonresident licensee has met the CE requirements of his or her home state.
  • The licensee was licensed prior to Jan. 1, 1980.
  • The licensee holds a temporary license.
  • The licensee holds a limited lines license, retired, or travel license.
