Required Iowa Insurance Continuing Education Hours

Producers

36-hours of insurance CE, including 3-hours of ethics are required every 3-year license term. Only 18 hours (50% of the total CE requirement) may be obtained through self-study. The remaining 18 hours must be completed in a classroom environment.

Crop Producers

18-hours of insurance CE, including 3-hours of ethics are required every 3-year license term. Only 9 hours (50% of the total CE requirement) may be obtained through self-study. The remaining 9 hours must be completed in a classroom environment.

Insurance License Renewal

License Term

The license term is the last day of the licensee’s birth month every 3 years.

License Renewal Process

  • A renewal notice will be sent via email (if available) by the state 60 days prior to the producer's expiration date. The notice will state whether the CE requirement has been met and state the renewal fee.
  • A producer is required to renew his or her license in a timely manner, regardless of whether a notice is received from the Insurance Division. *It is recommended that CE be completed at least 1 month in advance of license renewal.

Annuity Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell annuity products.

Initial Training
Hours: 4
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling annuity products. This requirement is separate from the current requirement for Indexed Insurance.

Indexed Insurance Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell indexed life products.

Initial Training
Hours: 4
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling indexed life products.

Long-Term Care Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell long-term care products.

Initial Training
Hours: 8
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling LTC products. This training course is required to be in a classroom setting; however, WebCE has received a waiver from the IA Insurance Division stating our 8-hour self-study course may be taken to satisfy this requirement.
 
Ongoing Training
Hours: 4
Frequency: Ongoing training must be completed every license period, following the initial training requirement.

Insurance CE Exam Requirements

Exam Rules

Exams are closed book. Students have unlimited retakes.

Monitor Requirements

Self-study final exams must be monitored by a disinterested third party who shall not serve for examinations of family members, relatives, or dependents; employers or supervisors; employees or subordinates; partners, joint ventures, or co-owners; or for anyone in whom the proctor or instructor has an economic or other interest in assuring the successful outcome of the examination.

Passing Score

Self-Study Final Exam: 70%

Repetition and Carryover

Carryover Rules

Excess CE hours may not be carried over to the next renewal.

Repetition Rules

A course may not be taken for credit more than once within a 3 year licensing term.

Reporting and Insurance CE Certificates of Completion

Certificates of Completion

WebCE provides online, printable certificates of completion in Iowa. Certificate of completion will be available to print online immediately after a final exam is passed. Producers must retain a copy of each certificate of completion in their files for 4 years.

Reporting

Next-Day Reporting: WebCE reports course completions to State Based Systems (SBS), the CE administrator, every business day.

Insurance CE Course Requirements

Course Presentation

Self-study online or correspondence. Only 50 percent of credit hours may be obtained through self-study.

Self-Study Requirements: Students should read course material prior to completing final exam.

Category Restrictions

There are no restrictions; however it would be preferred to take courses for license type.

State-Specific Insurance Product Training

Annuity Training

Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products in Iowa, producers must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours. This requirement is separate from the current requirement for Indexed Insurance.

Indexed Insurance Training

All non-resident producers who wish to sell fixed index life products must complete an approved 4-hour training course.

Long-Term Care Training

Non-resident producers who have completed an 8-hour NAIC LTCP course approved for use in any other licensed state have met the Iowa LTC training requirement. Non-resident producers that have not taken an approved LTCP course in another state must meet the training requirement by completing an Iowa approved course.

Non-Resident Insurance CE Requirements

Non-resident producers selling annuity, LTC, or indexed insurance have special training or education requirements as described above.

Exemptions from Insurance CE Requirements

Insurance CE Exemptions

The following individuals are exempt from CE requirements:

  • A producer who is an attorney licensed to sell insurance. The producer/attorney must file a report showing proof of compliance with the continuing legal education requirement for the attorney's home state and pay the CE fee and the renewal fee.
  • Attorneys who do not have a CE requirement in their home states must comply with the Iowa insurance CE requirements.
  • A producer who is on extended active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • A non-resident producer who lives in a state where CE is required. These producers must file the renewal notice through the NIPR gateway.
  • A producer who is licensed for credit or surety. The producer must file the renewal report and pay the renewal fee.
