Required New Jersey Insurance Continuing Education Hours

Producers

24-hours of insurance CE, including at least 3-hours of ethics are required every 2 year license term.

Public Adjusters

15-hours of insurance CE are required every 2 year license term.

Public Adjuster/Producer Combined License

24-hours of insurance CE, including at least 3-hours of ethics and 15 credit hours approved for public adjusters are required every 2 year license term. The remaining 6 credit hours may be completed using any approved course.

Insurance License Renewal

License Term

  • Producers:  The license term will expire at the end of the birth month every other year.               
  • Public Adjusters:  The license term will expire at the end of the birth month every other year.

Annuity Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell annuity products.

Initial Training
Hours: 4
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling annuity products.

Long-Term Care Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell long-term care partnership products.

Initial Training
Hours: 8
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling LTC products.
 
Ongoing Training
Hours: 4
Frequency: Ongoing training must be completed every 24-month period, following the initial training requirement.

Insurance CE Exam Requirements

Exam Rules

Self-study final exams are closed book. Producers may not refer to the course material while the exam is in progress.  If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.              

Monitor Requirements

Online monitor-free courses do not require a proctor. Online or paper-based self-study final exams are required to be proctored by a disinterested third party, any impartial person who does not have a financial interest in the outcome of the examination. The monitor cannot be related (by family) to the student.              

Passing Score

Self-Study Final Exam: 70%

Repetition and Carryover

Carryover Rules

No excess CE credit hours may be carried over to the next 2-year license term.                

Repetition Rules

Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in a license term. This rule applies to any variation of course types (self-study, classroom equivalent, etc).                  

Reporting and Insurance CE Certificates of Completion

Certificates of Completion

WebCE provides online, printable certificates of completion in New Jersey. Certificates of completion are available to print online immediately after the final exam is passed. The licensee must keep a copy of each certificate of completion in his or her files for a minimum of 5 years.

Next-Day Reporting: WebCE reports course completions electronically to PSI Services, LLC every business day.

Course Presentation

Producers can take online, monitor-free courses or online or paper-based self-study.         

Study Requirements

Self-Study RequirementsFor self study courses, students should read the course material prior to taking a closed-book, proctored final exam.                   

Online Monitor-Free Course Requirements: No final exam is required, but students must take and pass a series of interactive quizzes throughout the course with a minimum score of 70 percent for each interactive quiz.             

Category Restrictions             

There are no category restrictions in New Jersey for Producers. Any course approved for CE in New Jersey may be taken for credit. Public Adjusters may only take courses specifically approved for Public Adjusters.           

Non-Resident Insurance CE Requirements

State-Specific Insurance Product Training

Annuity 

Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products in New Jersey, producers must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours. *Non-residents who satisfy the training requirements of another state that are similar to New Jersey's law will be deemed compliant for New Jersey's requirement. 

Long-Term Care

       
  • Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products in New Jersey, nonresident producers must complete an initial 8-hour, NAIC LTC training course approved in any licensed state.   
  • Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: After completing the 8-hour initial training requirement, non-resident producers must complete 4 hours of state-approved LTC training every 24-month period following the initial training and every 24 months thereafter.

Non-Resident Insurance CE Requirements

Non-resident public adjusters who satisfy the public adjuster requirement in their resident state will be deemed compliant for the New Jersey public adjuster requirement.

Exemptions from Insurance CE Requirements

Insurance CE Exemptions

The following are exempt from New Jersey CE requirements:       

  • Non-resident licensees in good standing with their home states are exempt from New Jersey CE requirements.       
  • Non-resident licensees who completed a NAIC LTC training course in another state are exempt from taking the special training requirement in New Jersey.
