Insurance License Renewal

License Term

The license term is every 2 years ending on the last day of your birth month. CE requirements must be met on or before the expiration date on your current license.

  • Credit will not be given to a student who has passed the state exam but has not yet received a license number.

Long-Term Care Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell long-term care products.

Initial Training
Hours: 8
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling LTC products.

Frequency: Ongoing training must be completed every 24-month license period, following the initial training requirement.

Additional Information

NFIP Flood Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell flood insurance products.

Insurance CE Exam Requirements

Exam Rules

Self-study final exams are closed book. Producers may not refer to the course material while the exam is in progress. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

Monitor Requirements

Self-study final exams are required to be proctored by a disinterested third party, someone other than a supervisor or relative.

Self-Study Final Exam: 70%

Repetition and Carryover

Carryover Rules

A maximum of 24 excess CE credit hours may be carried over to the next 2-year license term.

Repetition Rules

Courses may not be repeated more than once in a 2-year license term.

Reporting and Insurance CE Certificates of Completion

Certificates of Completion

WebCE provides online, printable certificates of completion in Pennsylvania. Certificates of completion are available to print online immediately after the final exam is passed. The producer must keep a copy of each certificate of completion in his or her files for 6 years.

Producers can take courses through self-study, including Internet, computer-based, and paper courses.

Self-Study Requirements: Students must read the course material prior to taking a closed-book, proctored final exam.         

Category Restrictions             

Any course approved for CE in Pennsylvania may be taken for credit. Credit will not be given to a student who has passed the state exam but has not yet received a license number.

Long-Term Care Training

  • Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC partnership products, producers must complete an initial 8-hour state-approved training course. *Non-Residents who have completed an NAIC 8-Hour course in another state will be deemed compliant with Pennsylvania's requirement.
  • After completing the initial 8-hour LTC training requirement, producers must complete 4 hour follow-up training course every 24-month compliance period following the initial training. *Non-Residents who have completed an NAIC 4-Hour course in another state will be deemed compliant with Pennsylvania's requirement.

Non-Resident Insurance CE Requirements

Non-resident producers and adjusters have special training or education requirements as described above.

Exemptions from Insurance CE Requirements

Insurance CE Exemptions

The following licensees are exempt from CE requirements:

  • Producers licensed prior to January 1, 1971, who have been continuously licensed without adding additional lines of authority
  • Producers whose only line of authority is a limited line
  • Surplus Lines licensees
  • Non-resident insurance producers excluding Title producers
  • Individuals exempted by the commissioner due to hardship or good cause such as disability or a medical condition
  • Individuals who first obtained licenses without examination under Section 609(c) of the Fraternal Benefit Societies Code and whose appointments are limited to fraternal benefit societies
  • Non-resident Public Adjusters CE requirement will be reciprocal with their home state.
