What are the Insurance Exam Prep education requirements for Indiana?

Individuals must complete a pre-licensing course of study for the lines of authority desired before taking any examination. The prelicensing course must consist of 20 hours per line of authority on the general principles of insurance for that line of authority. The lines of authority requiring a pre-licensing course are as follows:

Life – 20 hours
Health and Accident – 20 hour
Life, Health, and Accident – 40 hours
Property – 20 hours
Casualty – 20 hours
Property and Casualty – 40 hours
Personal Lines - 20 hours

How to get an insurance license in Indiana

Meet the general eligibility criteria
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Maintain a principal place of residence or a principal place of business in Indiana
- Not have committed any act that is a ground for denial, suspension or revocation of a license

Complete required prelicensing education
- Prepare for the Indiana State Licensing Exam by completing a pre-licensing course of study.
- When making a licensing exam reservation, applicants will be required to present your Certificate of Completion at your licensing exam. After passing the Exam Prep Course Certification Exam, you will be able to download a PDF Certificate of Completion which is valid for six (6) months from the date of completion; you will need to take and pass your state exam within this timeframe.

Register and pass state licensing exam
- Make an exam reservation at https://www.pearsonvue.com/in/insurance or calling (866) 895-0496. Candidates should make a reservation online at least twenty-four (24) hours before the desired examination date.
- Bring one form of current signature identification (a valid driver’s license, non-driver ID, passport, military ID, or employee ID card, credit card) and a copy of your prelicensing education Certificate of Completion on exam day. The prelicensing education Certificate of Completion is valid for six months from the date of completion.

What are the WebCE Indiana Insurance Exam Prep course requirements?

Per Indiana PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons and answer each set of end-of-chapter quizzes with a score of at least 70 percent prior to taking an open-book final exam.
Please Note: Pre-license education providers are required to record the actual time the applicant spends in the course and not allow access to the certificate of completion until the applicant's time equals the number of required hours for the LOA.
Students should pass the closed-book final exam with a score of 70% or higher.
If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

What is the access period for WebCE Indiana Insurance Exam Prep courses?

90 days from the date of purchase. One additional extension for an additional 90 days can be purchased for $50.

Online PDF certificates of completion are available to print immediately after the final exam is passed. Pre-licensing course certificates are valid for 6 months from date of completion.

What is the process to transfer an insurance license to Indiana?

New residents who still hold an active license in their previous home state will not be required to complete prelicensing education or take the license examination as long as:

Application is made within 90 days of establishing residence in Indiana
Currently licensed in another state or canceled the previous license within 90 days prior to submitting the application
The license being applied for is the same line of authority as in the previous state

What is the process to obtain a non-resident insurance license in Indiana?

Nonresident license candidates may obtain an Indiana agent license, without having to complete the prelicensing education requirement or take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state.

Are there any Indiana insurance product specific training requirements?

Before selling, soliciting or negotiating the following products, insurance license holders are required to complete the training outlined below. These training hours can be used toward the total CE hours required to renew the license.

Annuity Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell annuity products.

Initial Training
Hours: 4
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling annuity products.

Additional Information

Long-Term Care Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell long-term care products.

Initial Training
Hours: 8
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling LTC products. The 8 hours may be counted as part of the required CE credits for the compliance period in which they were completed.

Ongoing Training
Hours: 5
Frequency: Ongoing training must be completed every 2-year license period, following the initial training requirement.

Long-Term Care Partnership Initial Training Requirement
Hours: 7
Frequency: One-time training must be completed prior to selling LTC insurance products. The 7-hour ILTCP must be completed in a classroom.
