What are the Insurance Exam Prep education requirements for Maryland?

Individuals must complete a pre-licensing course of study for the lines of authority desired before taking any examination. The prelicensing course must consist of 20 hours per line of authority on the general principles of insurance for that line of authority. The lines of authority requiring a pre-licensing course are as follows:
  • Life – 20 hours
  • Health and Accident – 20 hour
  • Property – 20 hours
  • Casualty – 20 hours
  • Personal Lines – 20 hours

How to get an insurance license in Maryland

  1. Meet the general eligibility criteria
    • Be at least 18 years of age.
    • Maintain principal place of residence or business in Maryland

  2. Complete required prelicensing education
    • Prepare for the Maryland State Exam by completing a pre-licensing course of study.
    • To satisfy the requirements for your course, you will need to pass a monitored Exam Prep Course Certification Exam with a 70% or greater.
    • WebCE will report your course completion to Prometric and will be issued an eligibility ID used for scheduling. You will be able to schedule your exam within 1-2 business days of the reporting. After passing the Exam Prep Course Certification Exam, you will be able to download a PDF Certificate of Completion which is valid for six months from the date of completion; you will need to take and pass your state exam within this timeframe.

  3. Register and pass state licensing exam
    • Make an exam reservation at www.prometric.com.
    • Bring two forms of current signature identification (a valid driver’s license, non-driver ID, passport, military ID, or employee ID card, credit card).
    Before making an exam reservation applicants should thoroughly review the State of Maryland Licensing Candidate Handbook. The Candidate Handbook and additional licensing information can be accessed by clicking on the Student Handbook button above.

  4. Apply for a License
    • After passing the exam, apply for your license by completing an application at www.nipr.com.

What are the WebCE Maryland Insurance Exam Prep course requirements?

  • Per Maryland PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons in the pre-license education course sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.
  • Students must pass the closed-book non-monitored Exam Prep Course Certification exam with a score of 70% or higher.
  • If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.
  • WebCE suggest to then utilize Exam Tutor and Flash Tutor for further practice before your exam day.

New residents who move to Maryland from another state who wish to obtain a Maryland resident license must meet the following requirements in order to be exempt from pre-license education and examination requirements:
  • If the applicant does not hold a Maryland nonresident license they must submit a new license application within 90 days of previous home state license cancellation.
  • If the applicant holds a Maryland nonresident license they will only be required to submit a request for an address change within 90 days of previous home state license cancellation.

What is the process to obtain a non-resident insurance license in Maryland?

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a Maryland producer license, without having to complete the pre-license education requirement as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state and hold an equivalent license for same line of authority.
