What are the Insurance Exam Prep education requirements for Ohio?

Individuals must complete a pre-licensing course of study for the lines of authority desired before taking any examination. The pre-licensing course must consist of 20 hours per line of authority on the general principles of insurance for that line of authority. The lines of authority requiring a pre-licensing course are as follows:
  • Life – 20 hours
  • Accident & Health or Sickness – 20 hours
  • Property – 20 hours
  • Casualty – 20 hours
  • Personal Lines – 20 hours

How to get an insurance license in Ohio

  1. Meet the general eligibility criteria
    • Be at least 18 years of age.
    • Be a resident of or have principal place of business in Ohio

  2. Complete required prelicensing education
    • Prepare for the Ohio State Exam by completing a pre-licensing course of study.
    • To satisfy the requirements for your course, you will need to pass a closed-book non-monitored Exam Prep Course Certification Exam with a 70% or greater.
    • When making a licensing exam reservation, applicants will be required to present your Certificate of Completion at your licensing exam. After passing the Exam Prep Course Certification Exam, your Certificate of Completion will be emailed to you.

  3. Register and pass state licensing exam
    • Make an exam reservation at psiexams.com or by calling (855) 807-3995.
    • Bring two forms of current signature identification (a valid driver’s license, non-driver ID, passport, military ID, or employee ID card, credit card) and your WebCE Certificate of Completion. Applicants may need to provide the WebCE pre-licensing provider school code: 7919 at the time of making their licensing exam reservation.
    • Candidates completing their Ohio Insurance exam via remote proctoring MUST email their pre-licensing certificate(s) or education waiver(s) to [email protected] within 24 hours of passing the exam. The Department is unable to process any license application without receipt of the valid PLE certificate(s)

  4. Submit fingerprints
    • All first-time individual resident producer and adjuster applicants must be fingerprinted in order to become licensed
    • Fingerprints are to be submitted through National WebCheck. Be sure to request that your results be sent directly to the Ohio Department of Insurance by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification (BCI).

  5. Apply for a License
    • After passing your licensing exam, complete the insurance license application online at www.nipr.com.
    • Candidates are required to submit an initial application and all required documentation to the Department within 180 calendar days of successfully passing the Ohio Insurance Exam.

What are the WebCE Ohio Insurance Exam Prep course requirements?

  • Per Ohio PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.
  • Students should pass the closed-book final exam with a score of 70% or higher.
  • If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.
  • WebCE suggest to then utilize Exam Tutor and Flash Tutor for further practice before your exam day.

What are the WebCE Ohio Pre-License Prep course requirements?

90 days from the date of purchase. One additional extension for an additional 90 days can be purchased for $50.

How often does WebCE report Ohio Insurance Exam Prep course completions?

Every Wednesday to the Ohio Department of Insurance

Does WebCE supply a certificate of completion for Ohio Insurance Exam Prep courses?

PDF Certificates of completion will be emailed by WebCE, upon completion of the pre-license course. Pre-licensing course certificates are valid for 180 calendar days beginning on the date of issuance.

You must present a Course Completion Certificate of the required pre-licensing education to the examination center in order to test.

What is the process to transfer an insurance license to Ohio?

New residents will not be required to complete pre-license education or take the insurance license examination as long as:
  • Application for licensure occurs within 90 days of establishing principal place of residence or business in Ohio
  • The license being applied for is the same line of authority as in the previous state and license is good standing; or
  • The license application is received within 90 days after cancellation of previous home state license, and at time of cancellation, individual was in good standing

What is the process to obtain a non-resident insurance license in Ohio?

In most cases, nonresident license candidates may obtain an Ohio agent license, without having to complete the pre-license education requirement or take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state.
