Insuring the Rental Car

Proper coverage for a rental car is not a simple issue. Most personal auto policies, when written on a standard basis, provide some automatic coverage, but few cover all the exposures involved. Policies vary from company to company. Rental car companies offer different types and degrees of coverage, but again there are significant variances from one company to the next, and much of what they offer is not really insurance, which causes special problems. Finally, the circumstances that void this type of coverage are particularly troublesome. The question of coverage can create a difficult situation for consumers and a significant errors and omissions (E&O) exposure for agents. This course reviews the issues involved with insuring rental cars and discusses an agent’s responsibilities.

The course includes the following chapters:

  • Rental Coverage in the ISO Personal Auto Policy
  • The Rental Company’s Coverages
  • Other Considerations
