The National Association of REALTORS® adopted a Code of Ethics in 1913 in order to establish a professional standard of conduct for all REALTORS®. The Code served as a self-policing guideline for the industry at a time when there were no laws on the books to do so. In fact, as individual states began to adopt license laws, many were based on the standards set in the Code of Ethics.

This course explores the NAR Code of Ethics and its practical application to everyday real estate practice by NAR members. A licensee who understands the concepts and values put forth by the Code of Ethics is better prepared to work with clients on the day-to-day issues that arise in the process of any real estate transaction. The knowledge shared in the course will assist the licensee to help consumers better understand the laws and the processes of property ownership.

This course is designed to meet the Code of Ethics training REALTORS® must complete every three years. Licensees must confirm with their local REALTOR® association if it will accept this course for ethics training.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • identify key aspirational concepts found in the Preamble to the National Association of REALTORS® Code of Ethics
  • describe “general business” ethics, and compare and contrast the REALTORS®’ Code of Ethics with business ethics, generally
  • describe the professional standards process for enforcing the Code of Ethics, including the duty to arbitrate
  • identify critical elements of due process as they relate to Code enforcement
  • identify factors considered by hearing panels in procuring cause disputes
  • describe the concepts established in Articles 1, 2, 12, and 17 of the Code of Ethics
  • identify possible violations of the Code of Ethics specifically related to Articles 1, 2. 12.and 17
