by Anne Shropshire, CLU | Sep 24, 2020
Medicare Annual Election Period (Open Enrollment) 2021
Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP) — otherwise known as Medicare Open Enrollment — begins October 15 and concludes December 7, 2020. With nearly 1,000 Baby Boomers retiring every day, more consumers are eligible for Medicare than ever before. Now, as the Annual Election Period approaches, it’s important insurance professionals are prepared to answer their clients’ questions about Medicare professionally and accurately.

Changes Allowed During the Medicare Annual Election Period

The Open Enrollment Period (or Annual Election Period) applies to Medicare Advantage (also known as Medicare Part C) and Medicare prescription drug coverage and runs from October 15 through December 7, 2020. During the Medicare Annual Election Period, consumers will be able to:

  • Switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare
  • Disenroll from Original Medicare and enroll in Medicare Advantage
  • Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
  • Sign up for a Part D prescription drug plan
  • Change from one Part D prescription plan to another
  • Cancel their prescription drug coverage

Any changes made during the Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP) will take effect on January 1, 2021.
