What are the Insurance Exam Prep education requirements for Minnesota?

Individuals must complete a pre-licensing course of study for the lines of authority desired before taking any examination. The prelicensing course must consist of 20 hours per line of authority on the general principles of insurance for that line of authority. The lines of authority requiring a pre-licensing course are as follows:

Life – 20 hours
Health and Accident – 20 hour
Life, Health, and Accident – 40 hours
Property – 20 hours
Casualty – 20 hours
Property and Casualty – 40 hours
Personal Lines– 20 hours

How to get an insurance license in Minnesota

Meet the general eligibility criteria
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Reside or maintain a principal place of residence in Minnesota.

Complete required prelicensing education
- Prepare for the Minnesota State Exam by completing a pre-licensing course of study.
- To satisfy the requirements for your course, you will need to pass a monitored Exam Prep Course Certification Exam with a 70% or greater.
- When making a licensing exam reservation, applicants will be required to present your Certificate of Completion at your licensing exam. After passing the Exam Prep Course Certification Exam, you will be able to download a PDF Certificate of Completion which is valid with WebCE for one year from the date of completion; you will need to take and pass your state exam within this timeframe.

Register and pass state licensing exam
- To schedule an examination, please visit https://test-takers.psiexams.com or call PSI Services at (866) 395-1006.
- Bring two forms of current signature identification (a valid driver’s license, non-driver ID, passport, military ID, or employee ID card, or credit card) and a copy of your prelicensing education Certificate of Completion on exam day.
- Examination results are valid for three years from the date of the examination.

Submit Fingerprint
- All applicants for Producer and Adjuster licenses must provide a set of fingerprints to the Minnesota Department of Commerce. Applicants can be fingerprinted at one of PSI Minnesota’s sites, during regular testing hours, on the day of your examination. The prints will be forwarded electronically to the appropriate review agencies. You will pay the fingerprinting fee at the test site on the day of testing. The $63.75 fee may be made payable by VISA, MasterCard, American Express or Discover. Failure to get fingerprinted on the day of the examination will delay the licensing process. What are the WebCE Minnesota Insurance Exam Prep course requirements?

Per Minnesota PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons and answer each set of end-of-chapter quizzes with a score of at least 70 percent prior to taking an open-book final exam.
Please Note: Pre-license education providers are required to record the actual time the applicant spends in the course and not allow access to the certificate of completion until the applicant's time equals the number of required hours for the LOA.
Students should pass the closed-book monitored final exam with a score of 70% or higher.
Exam Requirements: Self-Study exams are closed-book and must be monitored by a disinterested 3rd party. A proctor is a person who (1) verifies a student’s identity, and (2) processes an affidavit testifying that the student received no outside assistance with the course or examination. A proctor must be 18 years of age or older and must not have a financial or other conflict of interest with respect to a student's successful completion of the course or the examination. A proctor must not be: a relative of the student; the student's supervisor at work; a person the student supervises at work; or a student who is completing the same course.
If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

What is the access period for WebCE Minnesota Insurance Exam Prep courses?

90 days from the date of purchase. One additional extension for an additional 90 days can be purchased for $50.

The commissioner may waive all or part of the requirement for pre-license education and examination for individuals in other jurisdictions if a reciprocal licensing agreement is in effect, the individual is currently licensed in that jurisdiction and the licensing requirements of that jurisdiction are substantially similar to Minnesota.

What is the process to obtain a non-resident insurance license in Minnesota?

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a Minnesota producer license, without having to complete the pre-license education requirement or take a license examination, as long as they currently hold an active resident license of a similar type and are in good standing in their home state.

Are there any Minnesota insurance product specific training requirements?

Before selling, soliciting or negotiating the following products, insurance license holders are required to complete the training outlined below. These training hours can be used toward the total CE hours required to renew the license.
