Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. owns the certification marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIALPLANNER TM and federally registered CFP (with flame design) in the U.S., which it awards to individuals who successfully complete CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements.

What are the CE Requirements for the CFP Certification?

30 hours

Are there any subject area requirements for CFP CE?

Ethics: 2-hours of CFP Board-approved Ethics CE

Can CFP CE courses be repeated?

Courses cannot be repeated more than once in a 2 year license term.

When does CFP CE have to be completed?

The certification period expires on the last day of the renewal month every two years. The expiration date is located on the CFP Board ID card and can also be accessed by logging in at the CFP Board’s website.

Can CFP CE course hours carry over to the next renewal cycle?

Excess CE may not be carried forward to the next 2-year license term.

What is the renewal process for a CFP Certification?

  1. Complete CE requirements including the CFP Board-approved ethics CE course
    Note: The CE requirement is effective immediately upon initial certification. The number of CE hours for newly-certified CFP® certificants is prorated for the period from initial certification to the end of the initial certification period.
  2. Complete a Renewal Application every year in order to renew your CFP® certification
  3. Pay an annual certification fee. You can pay the fee online by logging into your CFP Board account.

What are the WebCE CFP Board Certification CE course requirements?

  1. WebCE courses are online self-study courses with non-monitored open-book final exams. Students should read through course material before taking final exam
  2. Note: Per the CFP Board-approved Ethics CE course regulations, students must read all chapters of the online course material before taking the non-monitored closed-book exam.

  3. Passing score: 70%
  4. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.
  5. Note: Per the CFP Board-approved Ethics CE course regulations, if a student fails the ethics CE exam more than three times they must restart the course from the beginning.
