Commercial Liability Insurance for Contractors

Overview

The commercial general liability (CGL) policy includes three coverage parts: bodily injury and property damage (Coverage A), personal and advertising injury (Coverage B), and medical payments (Coverage C). Contractors can use all coverage parts, but Coverage A is the most significant for them. This course reviews the basic policy’s coverage parts, key provisions, conditions, insurance limits, and customizable endorsements.

  • identify major categories of insurable liability risks for contractors and how the standard CGL policy covers each
  • differentiate the two coverage triggers in CGL policies and explain how each determines applicable policies for specific liabilities
  • recognize the impact of CGL exclusions (e.g., contractual liability, pollution, “damage to your work”) and how claims may still be covered
  • understand the significance of “insured” status and differentiate between named, automatic, and additional insureds under the standard CGL policy
