On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the South Dakota Division of Insurance is going live on State Based Systems (SBS).

- Producer testing will be unavailable through Pearson VUE from Thursday, July 10 to Tuesday, July 15.
- Thursday, July 10, The South Dakota Division of Insurance will have limited process functionality (including license-related processing, consumer complaints, and revenue collection), and NIPR will stop accepting online submissions (applications, contact change requests and appointments).
- Wednesday, July 16 at 9 a.m. CT: South Dakota licensing operations, as well as all other process functionality via SBS are available and NIPR begins accepting online submissions.

What are the Insurance Exam Prep education requirements for South Dakota?

South Dakota does not require licensing candidates to complete prelicensing education; however, it is recommended to complete an exam prep course before attempting to take your state’s licensing exam.

How to get an insurance license in South Dakota

Meet the general eligibility criteria
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Maintain principal place of residence or business in South Dakota

Prepare for state licensing exam
- Use the WebCE Exam Prep courses to better prepare you to pass the state licensing exam.

Register and pass state licensing exam
- Make an exam reservation at www.pearsonvue.com/sd/insurance or by calling (888) 873-6205.

Apply for a License
- After passing your licensing exam, complete the insurance license application online through www.nipr.com.

What are the WebCE South Dakota Insurance Exam Prep course requirements?

WebCE insurance exam prep courses follow the state exam content outlines. Students should read each lesson before proceeding to the next lesson.
WebCE suggests students pass the open-book non-monitored Exam Prep Practice exam with a score of 70% or higher and then utilize Exam Tutor and Flash Tutor for further practice before your exam day.

What is the access period for WebCE South Dakota Insurance Exam Prep courses?

90 days from the date of purchase. One additional extension for an additional 90 days can be purchased for $50.

How often does WebCE report South Dakota Insurance Exam Prep course completions?

WebCE does not report exam prep course completions as the South Dakota Division of Insurance does not require course completions to be reported.

Does WebCE supply a certificate of completion for South Dakota Insurance Exam Prep courses?

Online PDF certificates of completion are available to print immediately after passing the WebCE course exam. Certificates are for personal records and is not required for the state exam.

What is the process to transfer an insurance license to South Dakota?

If you are moving to South Dakota and wish to qualify for a South Dakota license without taking an examination, you must have held the same or a similar insurance license in your previous state and apply for a license in South Dakota within 30 days of the termination of license in the previous home state.
If you already hold a nonresident license in South Dakota and are moving to South Dakota, you will be required to submit the following:

Change of address
Letter of clearance from your home state
No application, fees, or exams are necessary

What is the process to obtain a non-resident insurance license in South Dakota?

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a South Dakota agent license, without having to take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state.You must have held the same or a similar insurance license in your previous state and apply for a license in South Dakota within 30 days of termination of license in the previous home state.

Are there any South Dakota insurance product specific training requirements?

Before selling, soliciting or negotiating the following products, insurance license holders are required to complete the training outlined below. These training hours can be used toward the total CE hours required to renew the license.

Annuity Best Interest Training

State required training fState required training for insurance producers that sell annuity products.or insurance producers that sell annuity products.

Annuity Best Interest Training
Hours: 4
Frequency: One-time training of a 4-Hour Annuity Suitability and Best Interest Standards course must be complete prior to selling annuity products.

Residents and non-residents who have completed training including the NAIC Best Interest Standards in another state with laws similar to South Dakota law will be deemed compliant with this requirement.

Additional Information

Long-Term Care Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell long-term care products.

Initial Training
Hours: 8
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling LTC products.

Ongoing Training
Hours: 4
Frequency: State-approved training must be completed by July 1st in even years, following the initial training requirement.

Non-Residents who have taken the initial 8-hour long-term care partnership course for another state, must complete a state-approved Medicaid training course before selling LTC insurance products in South Dakota.
