Between the government shutdown and the temporary government reopen, there
has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding the 2019 tax season. Whether you have
asked the question or have been asked by a client, you've probably been a
part of conversation surrounding tax refunds.
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC)
Filers
Although you were able to file your taxes as early as January 1,
2019, a law was passed in 2018 that requires the IRS to hold all tax refunds
that included the EITC or the ACTC. The IRS will hold these refunds until
February 15, 2019. If you filed with either of these credits and experienced no
other problems filing, you should expect your refund no earlier than February
25.
How do I check my refund status?
The IRS offers two different ways to track your refund: Where's My Refund on IRS.gov and the
IRS2Go mobile app. Through
the website and app, you'll be able to check the status of your refund. It
is important to note that Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child
Tax Credit (ACTC) refund filers may not see a refund date through these
platforms, but their dates should be reflected on both the app and the website
on February 23, 2019.
When will I receive my tax refund?
Below is a chart of when you should expect your tax refund if you filed
electronically. While this information is an estimate, it's based on
historical data as well as early information from the IRS and could be
applicable for most people. In the past, the IRS refunded more than 90% of
filed tax to taxpayers in less than 21 days.
