Course Description
The logistics and transportation industry pervades nearly every area of our lives. Virtually everything we use or consume had to be transported to us in some manner, through some aspect of today’s transportation system.

This course provides an overview of the transportation industry and its subsectors, looking at the risks that can arise from the various operations within each subsector of the supply chain. The course offers an overview of the transportation industry, and specifically the  following aspects of the industry: trucking, railroad transportation, maritime transportation, aviation transportation, express delivery services, and logistics services. The course concludes with a look at current and emerging developments that foretell the future of transportation. 

Learning Objectives

This is an intermediate-level course. Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • recognize major milestones in the history of the transportation system
  • identify the entities that regulate various aspects of the transportation system
  • recognize the meaning of terms commonly used in the transportation industry
  • identify the loss exposures that shippers and transportation companies face
  • recognize the types of insurance that can be used to insure transportation loss exposures
  • identify some current and emerging innovations likely to affect the transportation industry
