Investment Adviser Representative (IAR) CE Model Rule

Unlike other financial service professions, investment adviser representatives have previously not been subject to a continuing education requirement to maintain their registrations with state regulators. NASAA has now adopted a model rule to close that gap. The new model rule sets the parameters by which industry regulators could implement continuing education programs for investment advisers in their jurisdictions.

The full model rule can be read online on NASAA’s website. NASAA will begin enforcing the new continuing education (CE) requirements for investment advisers in January 2022.

IAR Continuing Education Requirements

NASAA requires investment adviser representatives to complete 12 hours of continuing education (CE) course credits annually. The required 12 hours are divided into the two components:

• Ethics and Professional Responsibility Requirement. Investment adviser representatives must complete six (6) credits of IAR regulatory and ethics content. At least three (3) of the six (6) hours must specifically cover the topic of ethics.
• Products and Practice Requirement. An investment adviser representative must complete six (6) credits of IAR products and practice content.

The model rule’s division into two components makes the IAR continuing education requirements compatible with most other continuing education programs.
