Colorado Pre-License Education Requirements

Individual Resident Producer Requirements

To qualify for a resident Colorado state insurance producer license, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:
  • Be a resident of Colorado
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Be trustworthy, competent, financially responsible, and of good personal and business reputation
  • Complete an approved prelicensing course of study (see Prelicense requirements below)
  • Pass a written examination and file a license application
  • Disclose on the licensure application all insurance licenses that have been previously revoked, denied, or suspended

Requirements by Insurance Line of Authority

Applicants must complete 40-hours of approved Prelicense education (PLE) for each major line of authority (LOA), and 10-hours of Colorado-specific training(which includes 3 hours of Principles of Insurance and 4 hours of Legal Concepts and Regulations.See below for license specific PLE requirements in Colorado:

The Certification Exam must be monitored by a disinterested third party (someone who is not a friend, family member, or financial connection to you).
  • Life – 50 Hrs
  • Accident & Health- 50 Hrs
  • Property & Casualty- 50 Hrs
  • Personal Lines -50 Hrs
  • Surplus Lines – 45 Minutes
