New York Real Estate Education Requirements

Salesperson or Broker

22.5 hours of continuing education. Courses must include:
  • 3 hours of Fair Housing and/or discrimination
  • 1 hour Agency
  • 18.5 hours of Electives
If a salesperson is within their first license term, they must complete 2 hours of agency along with the other designated educational hours.

Salesperson who complete an approved broker qualifying course (which requires passing the final exam), within their current term, will receive continuing education credit for completion of that course. Please note: The broker course does not satisfy the mandatory 3 hour fair housing requirement.

For those renewing on or after 7/1/21, the new requirements are:
  • 3 hours fair housing and diversity
  • 2.5 hours ethical business practices
  • 1 hour agency
  • 1 hour legal matters
  • 15 hours electives

NOTE: two hours of agency law must be completed (instead of 1 hour) by salespersons during their initial two-year licensing term.

Licensed real estate brokers who are engaged full-time in the real estate industry and who have been licensed for at least 15 consecutive years and have maintained continuous licensure and attorneys admitted to the New York State Bar who hold a broker’s license are exempt from the CE requirements. (This exemption applies to those renewing prior to July 1, 2021).
