Iowa does not require licensing candidates to complete prelicensing education; however, it is recommended to complete an exam prep course before attempting to take your state’s licensing exam.

1. Meet the general eligibility criteria
   • Must be a resident of Iowa
   • Must be at least 18 years of age prior to sitting for the examination.
   • Have not committed any act that is grounds for denial, suspension, or revocation as set forth in Iowa Code 522B.
   
   
2. Prepare for state licensing exam
   • Use the WebCE Exam Prep courses to better prepare you to pass the state licensing exam.
   
   
3. Register and pass state licensing exam
   • Make an exam reservation at www.pearsonvue.com/ia/insurance.
   Before making an exam reservation, applicants should thoroughly review the State of Iowa Licensing Candidate Handbook by clicking on the Student Handbook button above.
   
   
4. Apply for a License
   • Independent Adjuster and Staff Adjuster Providing Adjuster Services before January 1, 2025: Independent or staff adjusters who have been working in any state, including Iowa, before January 1, 2025, can apply for an Iowa license without taking the state exam. To qualify, you must submit the Modified Licensure Process Application by October 1, 2025.
     You can continue working as an adjuster while your application is being reviewed, as long as you submitted it by the deadline. Remember, staff adjuster licensure is optional.
   • Independent Adjuster and Staff Adjuster Not Providing Adjuster Services Before January 1, 2025: If you did not start working as an independent adjuster or staff adjuster in Iowa or any other state prior to January 1, 2025, and you are interested in becoming licensed in Iowa, you must meet the examination requirements through the normal licensing process unless waived by the commissioner. Those adjusters who submit a waiver request by October 1, 2025, will be allowed to continue working as an independent adjuster or staff adjuster until the Iowa Insurance Division provides a formal licensing decision.
   • An appraiser who is currently performing services as an appraiser in any state and possesses the requisite experience listed under Bulletin 25-04, will not be subject to the examination requirement in SF 619 and shall be allowed to utilize the modified licensure process until October 1, 2025 to request a license.
   • A person without the requisite experience who is currently performing services as an appraiser may apply for a waiver by the commissioner based on the individual’s other professional qualifications. If the person submitted a waiver request, they will be allowed to continue to provide services as an appraiser until a formal licensing decision is provided by the Iowa Insurance Division so long as the waiver request and application were submitted no later than Oct. 1, 2025. If the person without the requisite experience does not request a waiver, the person must meet the examination requirements through the normal appraiser licensing process.
   
   
5. Obtain $50,000 Surety Bond
   • The bond, which is referred to as “evidence of financial responsibility (from an insurer authorized to act as a surety)” in the state’s statute, is required. You can find a list of approved surety carriers on the Iowa website.
   
   
6. Submit Fingerprints:
   • Fingerprints are required for all first-time Iowa Resident Applicants. Must be completed via Field Print after applying for your license. Once the IID has received the application via NIPR, an email will be generated for the applicant with the necessary information to schedule an appointment to have their federal criminal history and fingerprints processed through https://fieldprintiowa.com/individuals. The email will contain the Iowa Insurance Division's Fieldprint code, which you will need to complete the scheduling process. To review additional information, please visit Iowa Insurance Division website. Allow up to 3 business days for results to be transmitted to NIPR.

• WebCE suggests students pass the closed-book non-monitored Exam Prep Practice exam with a score of 70% or higher and then utilize Exam Tutor and Flash Tutor for further practice before your exam day.

WebCE does not report exam prep course completions as the Iowa Insurance Division does not require course completions to be reported.

Online PDF certificates of completion are available to print immediately after passing the WebCE course exam. Certificates are for personal records and is not required for the state exam.

For purposes of the adjuster examination exemption requirements under Iowa Code 522C.9, an individual applying for a non-resident license in Iowa can meet the requirement of “Iowa-specific statutes and administrative rules” by submitting to the Iowa Insurance Division a completed and attested version of this informational Examination Exemption Attestation that relates to Iowa laws.

An applicant intending to become licensed in Iowa as required by SF 619, who is currently licensed by another state insurance regulator that performed a criminal history check on the applicant at the time of licensure or upon the most recent license renewal, has satisfied the criminal history requirements pursuant to 522B.5A.

An applicant intending to become licensed in Iowa as required by SF 619, who is currently licensed in another state and did not have a criminal history check performed by another state insurance regulator, a criminal history check of the applicant will be required to comply with the criminal history check requirements in 522B.5A. These individuals will be allowed to continue to provide services while the Division reviews the criminal history check, if the individual applies for licensure no later than Oct. 1, 2025.

Iowa’s reciprocity statute allows for reciprocal licensing only if the applicant’s home state exam includes Iowa law, since no other state licensing exams includes Iowa-specific statutes and administrative rules reciprocity does not apply at this time.
