License Term

Continuing education requirements must be met every two years on the last day of the licensee's birth month. Even birth years renew every even year. Odd birth years renew every odd year.

Annuity Training

Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling annuity products.

8 of the 16 hours should consist of general LTC, which can be taken online self-study or in a classroom. The remaining 8 hours should be specific to LTC partnership, which must be taken in a classroom.

Study Requirements

Self-Study Requirements: Student should read the course material prior to taking a closed-book final exam.

Category Restrictions

Of the 24-hour CE requirement, 3 hours must be in the subject of ethics and 18 hours must be on topics associated with the license type held. Property & Casualty Producers must complete 3 hours on the subject of Homeowners. Excess Ethics and Homeowners hours will not count towards the 18 hour license specific CE requirement.

Exam Rules

The final exam is closed book, and no outside information may be used to complete the exam. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have unlimited retakes but the exam questions will be different each time.

Monitor Requirements

Exam Proctor Requirements: Closed-book exam must be monitored by a disinterested 3rd party who is at least 18 years old. Proctors may not serve for examinations of family members, relatives, or dependents; employers or supervisors; employees or subordinates; partners, joint ventures, or co-owners; or for anyone in whom the proctor or instructor has an economic or other interest in assuring the successful outcome of the examination.

Self-Study Final Exam: 70%

Reporting and Colorado Insurance Continuing Education Certificates of Completion

Certificates of Completion

WebCE provides online, printable certificates of completion in Colorado. Certificates of completion will be available to print online immediately after a final exam is passed. Producers must keep a copy of each certificate of completion for 5 years.

Repetition and Carryover

Carryover Rules

Producers may carry over up to 12 credit hours into a new license cycle if the courses were taken in the final 120 days of their previous license cycle. Ethics hours carried forward will be counted as ethics.

You cannot repeat the same course within 2 years from the original course completion date.

Non-Resident Colorado Insurance Continuing Education Requirements

Annuity State-Specific Insurance Product Training

Non-resident insurance producers selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products in Colorado must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours. *Non-residents who satisfy the training requirements of another state that are similar to Colorado's law will be deemed compliant for Colorado's requirement.

Long-Term Care State-Specific Insurance Product Training

Non-resident insurance producers selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC products in Colorado, who satisfy the training requirements in any other state shall be deemed to satisfy the training requirements in this state.

Non-resident Insurance CE Exemptions

Non-resident insurance producers must be licensed and in good standing in their home state, must satisfy their home state CE requirements, and must pay a biennial continuation fee to the Colorado Division of Insurance.

Exemptions from Colorado Insurance Continuing Education Requirements

Insurance CE Exemptions

The following exemptions apply to these CE requirements:
  • First-time producers have until their second continuation cycle to comply.
  • Producers licensed to write only one or more of the following are exempt: travel ticket selling, title, limited lines credit, and/or crop hail.
