Overview
The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the laws and regulations that govern the practices of the funeral services industry in Virginia. Covering select portions of Virginia funeral service law (Code Chapter 28, Title 54.1) and regulations set forth by the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers (18 VAC 65-20), the course explains:
- general provisions of Virginia law
- license renewals and reinstatements
- requirements for licensure
- courtesy cards
- license refusal, suspension, revocation, and disciplinary action
- standards for embalming
- pricing standards and forms
- licensure of funeral establishments
- preneed contracts and trust fund requirements
Successful completion of this course enables the student to fulfill the one-hour continuing education study requirement on Virginia laws and regulations.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, students will be able to:
- describe the rules for renewal and reinstatement of funeral service licenses
- recite the Commonwealth's continuing education requirements for the industry
- characterize the responsibilities of a manager of record
- describe standards for embalming and preparation room requirements
- explain the disclosure statements required by the Federal Trade Commission
- understand the rules governing disposal of waste materials and the disposition of cremains
- recognize the rules governing the registration of surface transportation and removal services
- state the laws governing preneed contracts, including trust fund requirements
- describe recordkeeping and retention duties
- identify causes for disciplinary action against licensees
