Texas Legal Update I

Overview

In this mandatory four-hour course, licensees will learn about Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) rules, recent rule changes, and legislative updates. Students will also review updated contract forms and addenda. Finally, students will review state and federal fair housing laws, learning best practices to implement in sales, advertising, and property management. These topics will help students stay current on legislative changes and practices.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • summarize the TREC rulemaking process and identify recent TREC rule changes
  • identify the purpose and practice of the Broker-Lawyer Committee
  • recite recent changes to TREC contract forms
  • distinguish between mandatory and voluntary use of TREC contract forms
  • explain the purpose and scope of federal, state, and local fair housing laws
  • identify the protected classes found in the Fair Housing Act, TREC Canons of Professional Ethics and Conduct, TREC Rule Section 531.19 and NAR Code of Ethics
  • describe different forms of bias, steering, and appraisal bias
  • identify best practices for advertising and marketing related to fair housing
  • recall resources for fair housing information and assistance
  • compare the differences between reasonable accommodations and modifications

Designed For

Texas Real estate licensees who must take the 4 hour Legal Update I course each license cycle as part of their 18 hours of continuing education. This course fulfills that requirement.
