CTEC QE California Tax

Overview

This CTEC-approved 15-hour course on California tax law is geared toward new tax preparers who have not received prior instruction in tax preparation. The complete 60-hour package is required in order to become a Certified Registered Tax Preparer in California.

Once you have completed the 60-hour qualifying course the following must also be done to complete your CTEC CRTP registration: 

  • obtain a PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number) from the IRS
  • purchase a $5,000 tax preparer bond
  • register with CTEC within 18 months from the completion date on the certificate of completion for the 60-hour CTEC qualifying course

Objectives

After completing this course, students will be able to recognize, recall, and identify correct application of rules and guidelines related to:

  • federal and state economic stimulus legislation
  • California personal income tax
  • areas of nonconformity between California and federal income tax
  • the specifics of filing status, residency, income, deductions, credits
  • taxable and non-taxable income
  • business income, including corporate distributions such as dividends
  • industry-specific information about farming, cannabis, and healthcare-related tax issues

Students wishing to be Certified Registered Tax Preparers (CRTPs) in order to prepare taxes for a fee in California.
