Course Description
This course provides an introduction to the liability section of the personal auto insurance policy, focusing on the standard form (PP 00 01, 2005 edition) developed for this line by Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO). It describes the important elements of liability coverage in plain English using loss scenarios and examples to facilitate understanding. Generic references to how courts have interpreted various policy provisions are also included. After completing this course, the student will have an enhanced understanding of the following:

  • Key terms of the liability insurance agreement, including damages, bodily injury, property damage, legal liability, negligence, auto accident, and prejudgment interest.
  • Duty to defend and how this differs in scope from the duty to indemnify.
  • The five courses of action available to an insurer when a legitimate issue of coverage exists in a claim.
  • Exhaustion of limits provision and how this can work in the case of multiple parties with serious claims.
  • How the four categories of an “insured” are differentiated.
  • The different types of covered autos.
  • The five types of supplementary payments.
  • The nine liability exclusions applicable to any insured.
  • The four liability exclusions applicable to particular vehicles or circumstances.
  • The four key liability provisions applied to claim scenarios.
