Homeowners 2011: Key Endorsements - CLEQ

Course Description
Most homeowners policies include one or more endorsements. An endorsement is a form that is attached to a basic insurance policy to change one or more of the standard provisions of that form. These changes are generally made to meet the coverage needs of a particular insured or the underwriting requirements of the insurer with respect to that insured. Some endorsements add to or take away from the policy’s coverage in significant ways. Others merely correct or revise information or typographical errors in the policy declarations.

This course focuses on the major countrywide homeowners endorsements. The course is based primarily on endorsements used with the 2011 edition of the Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO), homeowners 3 special form (HO 3), because this is the most commonly used homeowners form. The homeowner endorsements discussed in this course are organized into the following categories:
  • property endorsements
  • liability endorsements
  • miscellaneous endorsements
  • home business endorsements

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • identify many of the property and liability coverage gaps in the homeowners policy that affect certain types of policyholders
  • name and describe the property and liability endorsements that can eliminate many of the homeowners policy’s coverage gaps
  • describe the exclusions and limitations for business-related losses under the homeowners policy and explain how the new home-based business endorsements can be used to cover these types of loss exposures
  • identify and describe endorsements that insurers may use to restrict the homeowners policy’s property and liability coverages in some circumstances
