For years, individuals planning a funeral had two choices: burial or traditional flame cremation. However, in many states today, there is now a third option: alkaline hydrolysis. Alkaline hydrolysis, also known as water cremation, is a process for the disposal of human remains that uses water, heat, and alkaline chemicals. This course examines water cremation's origins and the states where it is currently legal, explains the chemical process it uses, and considers the advantages and disadvantages of this disposition method. It also explores the reasons behind the growing preference for cremation in general and whether water cremation may indeed be the next green trend and option to be offered by funeral homes.
