Mandatory Topics for Brokers and Salespersons (VA)

Overview

Virginia real estate professionals must complete eight hours of mandatory topics in order to renew salesperson and broker licenses. This course is a general update and review of many of the most important areas critical to the salespeople and brokers' ability to act in a professional manner.

This eight-hour course includes:

  • 3 hours in ethics and standards of conduct
  • 2 hours in fair housing
  • 1 hour in legal updates and emerging trends
  • 1 hour in real estate agency
  • 1 hour in real estate contracts

The course also provides detailed information about flood hazard areas and the National Flood Insurance Program, types of listing contracts, the NAR Code of Ethics, and state and federal laws on fair housing, discrimination, and hoarding. While this course includes the Code of Ethics training REALTORS® must complete every three years, licensees must confirm with their local REALTOR® association for acceptance.

This course meets Virginia's eight-hour, mandatory course continuing education requirement.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • intelligently discuss the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice as they apply to the practice of real estate
  • relate the six fiduciary duties that agents owe their clients
  • identify the seven federally protected classes and four additional protected classes added by Virginia under the fair housing laws
  • discuss the differences between reasonable accommodations and reasonable modifications
  • illustrate the differences between service animals and emotional support animals
  • •name the three elements that constitute breach of fiduciary duty
  • summarize the basic concepts of the National Flood Insurance Program
