Setting the Standard: The Code and the Canons

Overview

The goal of of any real estate professional is continued professional development. Having a solid understanding of both the Ohio Canons of Ethics and the National Association of REALTORS® Code of Ethics can help steer licensees towards professionalism and away from unethical behavior and ethics violations. This course provides an in depth understanding of the both the Code of Ethics and the Canons of Ethics and their practical application in the practice of real estate.

This course is designed to meet the Code of Ethics training REALTORS® must complete every three years. Licensees must confirm with their local REALTOR® association if it will accept this course for ethics training.

 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • recall the history, structure, and importance of the Code of Ethics and the Standards of Practice
  • recognize their duties as an Ohio licensee in accordance with the Canons of Ethics
  • articulate the ethical duties that Ohio licensees and Ohio REALTORS® owe to the public and other licensees
  • recognize the ethical duties REALTORS® and Ohio licensees owe to clients and customers
  • describe the new nondiscrimination guidelines, including the addition of Standard of Practice 10-5 to the Code of Ethics
  • recognize the major difference between the Code of Ethics and the Canons of Ethics
  • summarize the enforcement process of the Code of Ethics and the Canons of Ethics

This course satisfies the Ohio Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing requirement of 3 hours on the Canons of Ethics every three years.
