What are the Insurance Exam Prep education requirements for Illinois?

Individuals must complete a pre-licensing course of study for the lines of authority desired before taking any examination. The prelicensing course must consist of 20 hours for each major line of authority (LOA), 7.5 hours must be conducted in a live classroom setting and the remaining 12.5 hours may be conducted through self-study as part of the classroom-based program. How to get an insurance license in Illinois

  1. Meet the general eligibility criteria
    • Be at least 18 years of age
    • Be a resident of the state of Illinois

  2. Complete required prelicensing education
    • Prepare for the Illinois State Licensing Exam by completing a pre-licensing course of study.
    • In accordance with Illinois Department of Insurance regulations, candidates for an insurance producer’s license must complete a minimum of 20 hours of education per line, which must include 7.5 hours of live webinar instruction. WebCE has partnered with Dohrn Insurance Training webinar to provide the live webinar portion of its Illinois exam prep course. As the course provider of record, WebCE will issue a certificate of course completion (required when applying for a producer’s license) after a student passes the WebCE course final exam and completes a Dohrn Insurance Training webinar.

  3. Register and pass state licensing exam
    • Make an exam reservation at www.pearsonvue.com or by calling (800) 274-0402.
    • Bring two forms of current signature identification (a valid driver’s license, non-driver ID, passport, military ID, or employee ID card, credit card) and a copy of your pre-licensing Certificate of Completion in order to be admitted to the exam.
    Before making an exam reservation applicants should thoroughly review the State of Illinois Licensing Candidate Handbook. The Candidate Handbook and additional licensing information can be accessed by clicking on the Student Handbook button above.

  4. Apply for a License
    • After passing the examination, wait 5 days and apply online for your insurance license at www.nipr.com.

What is the access period for WebCE Illinois Insurance Exam Prep courses?

90 days from the date of purchase. One additional extension for an additional 90 days can be purchased for $50.

How often does WebCE report Illinois Insurance Exam Prep course completions?

Does WebCE supply a certificate of completion for Illinois Insurance Exam Prep courses?

WebCE will issue a PDF certificate of course completion 2 business days after a student passes the WebCE course final exam and completes a Dohrn Insurance Training webinar. The licensing candidate must take the initial examination within 12 months of completing the PLE course.

What is the process to transfer an insurance license to Illinois?

New residents who still hold an active license in their previous home state may not be required to complete pre-license education or take an examination as long as they meet the following requirements:
  • Application is received within 90 days after cancellation of previous home state license.
  • Applicant was in good standing in previous home state at the time of cancellation.

What is the process to obtain a non-resident insurance license in Illinois?

Nonresident license candidates may obtain an Illinois producer license, without having to complete the pre-license education requirement or take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state.
