What are the Insurance Exam Prep education requirements for Connecticut?

Individuals must complete a pre-licensing course of study for the lines of authority desired before taking any examination. The prelicensing course must consist of 20 hours per line of authority on the general principles of insurance for that line of authority. The lines of authority requiring a pre-licensing course are as follows:

Life – 20 hours
Health and Accident – 20 hour
Life, Health, and Accident – 40 hours
Property – 20 hours
Casualty – 20 hours
Property and Casualty – 40 hours
Personal Lines – 20 hours

How to get an insurance license in Connecticut

Meet the general eligibility criteria
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be a US citizen or have a current work authorization.
- Reside or maintain a principal place of residence in Connecticut.

Complete required prelicensing education
- Prepare for the Connecticut State Exam by completing a pre-licensing course of study.
- To satisfy the requirements for your course, you will need to pass a monitored Exam Prep Course Certification Exam with a 70% or greater.
- When making a licensing exam reservation, applicants will be required to present your Certificate of Completion at your licensing exam. After passing the Exam Prep Course Certification Exam, you will be able to download a PDF Certificate of Completion which is valid for one year from the date of completion; you will need to take and pass your state exam within this timeframe.

Register and pass state licensing exam
- Make an exam reservation at www.pearsonvue.com/ct/insurance or by calling (866) 407-2057.
- Bring two forms of current signature identification (a valid driver’s license, non-driver ID, passport, military ID, or employee ID card, credit card) and a copy of your prelicensing education Certificate of Completion on exam day. The prelicensing education Certificate of Completion is valid for one year from the date of completion.

Apply for a License
- After passing the exam, apply for your license by completing an application at www.nipr.com.

What are the WebCE Connecticut Insurance Exam Prep course requirements?

Per Connecticut PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons in the pre-license education course sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.
Students must pass the closed-book monitored Exam Prep Course Certification exam with a score of 70% or higher.
Exam Requirements: Self-Study exams are closed-book and must be monitored by a disinterested 3rd party. Monitors must not serve for examinations of family members, relatives, or dependents; employers or supervisors; employees or subordinates; partners, joint ventures, co-owners, or business associates; or for anyone in whom the monitor or instructor has an economic or other interest in assuring the successful outcome of the examination.
If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

What is the access period for WebCE Connecticut Insurance Exam Prep courses?

90 days from the date of purchase. One additional extension for an additional 90 days can be purchased for $50.

How often does WebCE report Connecticut Insurance Exam Prep course completions?

WebCE does not report exam prep course completions as the Connecticut Department of Insurance does not require course completions to be reported.

Does WebCE supply a certificate of completion for Connecticut Insurance Exam Prep courses?

Online PDF certificates of completion are available to print immediately upon completion of the pre-license course. Pre-licensing course certificates are valid for one year from date of completion.

What is the process to transfer an insurance license to Connecticut?

New residents will not be required to complete pre-license education or take the license examination as long as:

You apply for a resident license within 90 days of leaving your former resident state
You held an active license in your former resident state within 90 days of moving from your former resident state
The license being applied for is the same line of authority as in the previous state.

New residents who do not apply within the 90-day time period will be required to meet Connecticut's pre-license education and examination requirements.

What is the process to obtain a non-resident insurance license in Connecticut?

Non-resident license candidates may obtain a Connecticut producer license, without having to complete the prelicense education requirement or take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state. In addition, applicants must hold an equivalent license in their home state.

Are there any Connecticut insurance product specific training requirements?

Before selling, soliciting or negotiating the following products, insurance license holders are required to complete the training outlined below. These training hours can be used toward the total CE hours required to renew the license.

Annuity Best Interest Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell annuity products

Annuity Best Interest Training
Hours: 4 CE hours
Frequency: One-time training of a 4-Hour Annuity Suitability and Best Interest Standards course must be complete prior to selling annuity products.

Residents and non-residents who have completed training including the NAIC Best Interest Standards in another state with laws similar to Connecticut law will be deemed compliant with this requirement.

Long-Term Care Partnership Training

State required training for insurance producers that sell long-term care products.

One-Time Training
Hours: 10 (7 Life and Health and 3 Law/Regulations and Ethics)
Requirements: Must hold a valid Accident and Health license in Connecticut
Training Provider: LTCi Training

Resident and non-resident producers who wish to market Partnership-approved policies must complete the training.

State required training for insurance producers that sell flood insurance products.

NFIP Flood Training
Hours: 3
Frequency: One-time training must be complete prior to selling flood insurance products.
Flood requirements effective for those licensed on or after 4/15/2026
