What are the Funeral Continuing Education requirements for Michigan?

Annual CE Requirements: 4 hours

Are there any subject area requirements for Michigan Funeral CE?

2 of the annual 4 CE hours must be dedicated to one or more of the following Mandatory subjects:

  • Technical skills required for embalming and restorative art.
  • Funeral ethics and funeral service best practices.
  • Grief counseling.
  • Occupational health and safety for funeral home workers.
  • Communicable diseases including transmission and sterilization techniques.
  • Statutes and rules of this state relating to the practice of funeral directing.
  • Prepaid funeral sales.
  • Consumer protection, Federal Trade Commission funeral rules, and fair labor standards requirements.

When does Michigan Funeral CE have to be completed?

CE must be completed by 10/31 annually. Licenses renew 10/31 of each odd year.

Can Funeral CE courses be repeated?

Courses cannot be repeated for credit in a license term.

Are there any Funeral CE credit type limits?

1 credit limit 1 per year, for physically attending a meeting of the Board of Examiners in Mortuary Science.

Can Funeral CE course hours carry over to the next renewal cycle?

No, excess credits do not carry over.

What are the WebCE Michigan CE course requirements?

  • WebCE courses are online approved self-study courses with non-monitored open-book final exams. Students should read through course material then complete exam.
  • Passing score: 70%
  • If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

What is the access period for WebCE Michigan Continuing Education courses?

12 months from the original date of purchase.

How often does WebCE report Michigan Continuing Education course completions?

WebCE will not report course completions instead the mortuary science licensee is required to submit documentation only when requested by Department.

Does WebCE supply a certificate of completion for Michigan Funeral CE courses?

Online PDF certificates of completion are available to print immediately after the final exam is passed. Students should maintain written evidence of completion for a period of 4 years following the date the CE is reported.

Are there any CE exemptions?

The CPE requirement may be waived if the licensee submits a written request and the board finds the failure to attend was due to:

  • Disability
  • Military service
  • Absence from the continental U.S.
  • Other circumstances beyond the licensee’s control
