Producers

24-hours of insurance CE, including at least 3-hours of ethics are required every 2 year license term.

South Carolina Insurance Renewal

License Term

The license term is the last day of the licensee's birth month, by 5pm eastern, every odd-or-even year based on the year the licensee was born.

License Renewal Process

  • All producers licensed in South Carolina are required to renew their producer license and pay a $25 license renewal fee by the last day of their birth month.
  • The $25 license renewal fee is payable as a part of the online producer license renewal process. Producers receiving a CE exemption are still required to renew their license and pay the $25 license renewal fee by the last day of their birth month.
  • In addition to the license renewal fee, producers are also subject to an annual CE reporting fee of $7.50. This fee is payable to Prometric and the reporting fee for each year of the compliance period is required to be paid by the last day of the producers birth month.

Self-Study Requirements: Students should read the course material prior to taking the final exam.

Category Restrictions

Producers who hold a dual property and casualty license and a life, accident, and health license must complete at least 8 of the required 24 CE hours in courses related to each of these lines of authority.
  • Excess Ethics credits may not be applied to cover the minimum 8 hours needed in each license specific requirement for combined Life/Health and Property/Casualty producers.

Exam Rules

The final exam is closed book, and no outside information may be used to complete the exam. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

Monitor Requirements

Exam Proctor Requirements: Closed-book exams must be monitored by a disinterested 3rd party. Monitors shall NOT serve for examinations of: family members, relatives, or dependents, employers or supervisors, employees or subordinates, partners or joint ventures or co-owners, or for anyone in whom the proctor or instructor has an economic or other interest in assuring the successful outcome of the examination.

Repetition and Carryover

Carryover Rules

Producers may carry over a maximum of 18 credit hours to the next license renewal period. Excess hours of an ethics course will be carried over as general credit. Courses carried forward will count as a duplicate if completed again in the current renewal cycle.

Repetition Rules

You cannot repeat the same course within 2 years from the original course completion date.

Non-Resident South Carolina Insurance Continuing Education Requirements

State-Specific Insurance Product Training

State product training is required for producers planning to sell Long-Term Care and Annuity.

Non-resident Insurance CE Requirements

  • Non-resident producers who meet the CE requirements of their home states do not have to comply with South Carolina CE requirements.
  • Non-resident producers who have not completed a Long-Term Care Partnership training course in their home state or another state with a Long-Term Care Partnership training requirement are required to take the South Carolina Long-Term Care Partnership training course.
  • Non-residents are exempt from the Long-Term Care Partnership requirement if they have completed the LTC requirement in their home state or another state with a Long-Term Care Training course.

Exemptions from South Carolina Insurance Continuing Education Requirements

Insurance CE Exemptions

The following individuals are exempt from all CE requirements:
  • A licensee holding a limited license to sell only credit life, credit health insurance, bail bonds and travel accident and baggage insurance;
  • A licensee outside the United States or its territories;
  • A licensee who is a resident attorney licensed to practice law in the state;
  • A licensee who is an employee of a trade association holding a limited license to sell only surety bonds to its association members;
  • A licensee who has reached the age of 65 prior to July 1, 2006 and has been licensed for at least 10 years or who have reached 65 after July 1, 2006 and have been licensed for at least 10 years and who no longer sell, solicit or negotiate insurance.
The producer must notify the Division office in writing if he/she falls under one of the exempt categories.
