What are the Insurance Exam Prep education requirements for Colorado?

Individuals must complete a pre-licensing course of study for the lines of authority desired before taking any examination. The prelicensing course must consist of 40 hours for each major line of authority (LOA) plus 10-hours of Colorado-specific training (which includes 3 hours of Principles of Insurance and 4 hours of Legal Concepts and Regulations).   • Accident & Health – 50 hours

  • Personal Lines – 50 hours
  • Surplus Lines – 20 hours

How to get an insurance license in Colorado

  1. Meet the general eligibility criteria
    • Be at least 18 years of age
    • Must be a US citizen or have a current work authorization.
    • Reside or maintain a principal place of residence in Colorado.

  2. Complete required prelicensing education
    • Prepare for the Colorado State Licensing Exam by completing a pre-licensing course of study.
    • To satisfy the requirements for your course, you will need to pass a monitored Exam Prep Course Certification Exam with a 70% or greater.
    • When making a licensing exam reservation, applicants will be required to provide the WebCE Colorado provider school code number 49459. After passing the Exam Prep Course Certification Exam, you will be able to download a PDF Certificate of Completion which is valid for one year from the date of completion; you will need to take and pass your state exam within this timeframe.

  3. Register and pass state licensing exam
    • Make an exam reservation at https://home.pearsonvue.com/co/insurance or by calling 800-274-2616.
      Before making an exam reservation applicants should thoroughly review the State of Colorado Licensing Candidate Handbook. The Candidate Handbook and additional licensing information can be accessed by clicking on the Student Handbook button above.
    • Bring two forms of current signature identification (a valid driver’s license, non-driver ID, passport, military ID, or employee ID card, credit card).

  4. Apply for a License
    • After successfully completing the required examination, applicants must complete an online application through Sircon or through NIPR.

What are the WebCE Colorado Insurance Exam Prep course requirements?

  • Per Colorado PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons in the pre-license education course sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.
  • Students must pass the closed-book monitored Exam Prep Course Certification exam with a score of 70% or higher.
  • Exam Requirements: Self-Study exams are closed-book and must be monitored by a disinterested 3rd party. Proctors must not serve for examinations of family members, relatives, or dependents; employers or supervisors; employees or subordinates; partners, joint ventures, co-owners, or business associates; or for anyone in whom the proctor or instructor has an economic or other interest in assuring the successful outcome of the examination.
  • If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

Online PDF certificates of completion are available to print immediately after the final exam is passed.
IMPORTANT: The licensing candidate must take the initial examination within 12 months of completing the PLE course. If a passing exam score is not achieved by the end of the 12 months, applicants will have to retake the PLE course, and earn a new certificate of completion.

What is the process to transfer an insurance license to Colorado?

New residents who still hold an active license in their previous home state will not be required to complete prelicense education or take the insurance license examination as long as:
  • Applicant holds a resident insurance license in another state within 90 days prior to submitting a Colorado license application.
  • The license being applied for is the same line of authority as in the previous state.
