What is the process to transfer an insurance license to South Dakota?

If you are moving to South Dakota and wish to qualify for a South Dakota license without taking an examination, you must have held the same or a similar insurance license in your previous state and apply for a license in South Dakota within 30 days of the termination of license in the previous home state.
If you already hold a nonresident license in South Dakota and are moving to South Dakota, you will be required to submit the following:

  • Letter of clearance from your home state
  • No application, fees, or exams are necessary

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a South Dakota agent license, without having to take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state.You must have held the same or a similar insurance license in your previous state and apply for a license in South Dakota within 30 days of termination of license in the previous home state.
