How to Renew Your MD Tax Preparer Registration

  1. Verify Your Renewal Date: Unlike many states, Maryland tax preparer registrations expire every two years from the date they were issued. Log in to the Maryland Department of Labor portal to confirm your specific expiration date.
  2. Complete 16 Hours of Board-Approved CE: You must complete at least 16 hours of continuing education (CE) during every two-year registration term.
  3. Confirm Credits Reported: WebCE is an IRS-approved provider. Once you complete your federal hours, we report them directly to the IRS to help you maintain your Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP) status. (Maryland preparers are exempt from the AFTR course but still need to complete the CE hours).
  4. Submit Renewal & Pay State Fees: Once your CE is complete, visit the Maryland Board of Individual Tax Preparers website to file your renewal application.Ensure your IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) is active for the current year.
